Driver Crashes, Airlifted To Hospital

FOUR OAKS, N.C. -

A Smithfield man was airlifted to Duke Hospital after crashing his car at a high rate of speed, according to the Highway Patrol.

The single car crash happened around 11:15 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Black Creek and Elevation Roads in Four Oaks.

According to The Highway Patrol the driver, Mark Thornton, 44, of Smithfield was speeding when his car hit the right side of the road. Thornton overcorrected and then drove down an embankment into a swamp, landing on the passenger side.

There's no word on his condition.
