HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -

A resident of a state-regulated group home in Holly Springs is facing attempted murder charges for stabbing another man with a screwdriver.

Police have charged 22-year-old Gregory Henry McClain with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

The victim was taken to Wake Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

McClain is in the Wake County jail under a $1.5 million bond.

The incident happened Saturday at a state-regulated home for adults with mental illness, located off Main Street in Holly Springs.

The home, which houses up to six adults, has come under fire from Town of Holly Springs officials and neighbors.

Town officials said despite being open six weeks, police have responded to 17 calls at the home.

"Today's the first assault we're aware of, but we've been concerned this might happen," said Town of Holly Springs Public Information Officer Mark Andrews.

The Town of Holly Springs said it's hoping to file a court order with the state by Monday, which requests the home be shut down until it can be further investigated.

"We don't think it's an appropriate place for a house like this," said neighbor Lisa Fisher. "There are tons of children up and down the street, so we've been very concerned."

"I haven't seen any supervision over there whatsoever," said another neighbor, Michael Dye. "You see everybody wandering up and down the street at night too."

The home's administrator, Obi Achumba, said while he and staff cannot stop the residents from leaving the home, they are always supervised.

"The notion that we don't watch them is completely false," he said.

Achumba said the stabbing was an isolated incident, and said he does background checks of residents before they move in. He thinks many of the concerns are raised because he houses people with mental illnesses.

"People tend not to be so friendly when people not like them are around them," he said. "Sometimes people have the notion, 'not in my backyard. not in my neighborhood.'"

This man is using the system to keep from losing his house to foreclosure. He does not care about these people. He tried to throw one for the residents out of his house on freezing cold night with no jacket meds or place to go. The neighbors had to call the police so the resident wouldnt be on the streets! This man is a fraud and the DHHS and the state of North Carolina should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to go on. They are responsible for that man being stabbed!

Obi Achumba is a fraud they need to shut him down along with the taxi service that comes up when u google his address.. maybe he should focus on paying his TAXES on the other properites he has... mental illness is like diabeties - COME ON ALREADY -- You dont see people with diabeties going off the wall. I would like to see Obi Achumba have a state run cash cow move next door to him. They only way I could see that house staying open is if Mr. Achumba bought the neighboring homes and moved his family in to both. Obi Achumba is a hypocrite and a liar. He is on record saying that mental illness is like diabeties. We would more than welcome and state run home that housed diabetics. Diabetics do not have criminal records and do not stab people 9 times with a screwdriver. They also dont get a visit from the police 17 times in 6 weeks. Hopefully this incident will open peoples eyes in other neighborhoods that Obi Achumba owns homes. Mr. Achumba takes advantage of the system and hopefully this will expose him. This home is a hazard not only for the residents but for the neighbors who are chasing the american dream.
