Cary Police will soon have a bigger presence in the western part of town.
The department is expanding its "geo-policing" beat system with a new district focusing on everything west of Highway 55.
Chief Pat Bazemore says the program they started in July has already had positive results with decreased crime rates across the board for things like robbery, burglary and aggravated assault.
"I do think it's a direct result of geo-policing," said Bazemore. "Our folks are taking responsibility, accepting accountability for the things that are going on in their particular areas, their particular districts."
The town council unanimously approved resources for the new beat at Thursday's council meeting.
The expansion will be paid for with money already budgeted for vacant positions.
