The 19th annual NC Assistive Technology Expo will be held December 3-4, 2009 at the North Raleigh Hilton. This two day conference provides information and hands-on access to state of the art assistive technology. These tools empower people with disabilities to live independently, work, participate in educational opportunities and access their communities. Assistive technology devices include low tech items such as kitchen gadgets to high tech computer-based environmental control systems. The conference includes 40 concurrent sessions, a Keynote Address, poster sessions and an Exhibit Hall featuring over 60 companies and agencies that provide assistive technology equipment and services. The Exhibit Hall is FREE and open to the public on Thursday, December 3 only. Participants include: persons with disabilities, family members, seniors, teachers, therapists, Vocational Rehabilitation staff, employers, college professors, and medical staff.
Robert Rummel-Hudson, author of Schuyler's Monster: A Father's Journey with His Wordless Daughter will be presenting the keynote address: Fighting Monsters with Rubber Swords. He will discuss his family's journey to Assistive Technology and the lessons they've learned along the way. Their experiences will be familiar to parents in similar circumstances, and his perspective should be beneficial to professionals who work in the field of Assistive Technology. Robert Rummel-Hudson's memoir, Schuyler's Monster: A Father's Journey with His Wordless Daughter, tells the story of raising a little girl with a disability and learning to become the father she needs. It was published in February 2008 by St. Martin's Press.
