JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. -

Complaints about traffic problems have turned into calls for creating a new town in Johnston County.

It started as a thread on an internet forum on the website www.4042.com about two weeks ago.

Johnston County commissioners had approved a rezoning request for a 300-acre development near the intersection of Interstate 40 and Highway 42, also known as the Cleveland area. A study says the new development would bring about 25,000 more cars through the area.

And people started complaining online about traffic.

"There is growth and development that is unchecked. And other folks are calling the shots. Some of us feel that we are a cash cow that is being milked," said Carl Johnson, who participated in the online discussions.

Soon the online chat turned to incorporation - forming a new town with its own government.

"We want to be able to have our own representative voices heard and acted upon," said Johnson, who started his own website about incorporation (http://clevelandschool.webs.com)

The group also does not want the community to be swallowed up by neighboring towns that are expanding quickly; And to have to pay their taxes.

"It's either going to be annexation from either Garner heading this way or Clayton heading west or incorporation," Johnson said.

The group would need at least 15 percent of the registered voters in the area to sign a petition to get started with the incorporation process.

They will meet in person for the first time Thursday night to find out how much support they have. The meeting will be at the Golden Corral on Son-Lan Parkway near the intersection of 40/42. It starts at 6pm.

The General Assembly would have the final say about incorporation.

It lost it's Charm / appeal when they tore up farm land & trees then replaced it with buildings, parking lots, & junk! I still can't believe all the houses there either! Anyone w/ sense knows the numbers don't add up with houses, people, & schools! There are already around 11 title 1 schools in johnston county! Title 1 means that atleast or around 50% of children qualify and recieve free/ reduced price meals and the EOG testing scores are low. Our teachers can't continue to do their jobs and tax payers can't afford to keep paying a price already to high to build more schools. There needs to be some order put in place I agree. traffic is a huge problem too. It's just plain crazy around there.

With all the commercial development clustered there, it is a major surprise that it isn't in any town's limits already. You rarely see that much retail in a unincorporated area. It really could use some municipal planning!

It is a planning mess...just like the horrible areas off of I95. It sure is not charming town material in my opinion. Just plain ugly and uninviting. I avoid that area at all costs!

What was left out of the article was that we are in the exploratory stages of this process and are trying to gather the hard facts about possible incorporation. No decision has been made to proceed, because, until we know the facts about our options, there is no way to make an informed choice.

They should call this new town "Fortyfortytwo"
