JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C.

Each year the Ava Gardner Museum celebrates Ava's life and career by hosting the Ava Gardner Festival. This annual event includes heritage tours, screenings of classic Ava Gardner films, and special exhibits. To support this annual event, the Ava Gardner Museum has been awarded the following grants from local and statewide foundations:

$250 from the Johnston County Visitors Bureau;$1,000 from the Johnston County Community Foundation;$1,000 from the Johnston County Arts Council; and$1,500 from the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation.

The grant received from the Johnston County Visitors Bureau was for the marketing and promotion of the Ava Gardner Festival. "For over 20 years, the Johnston County Visitors Bureau has been supporting organizations that host events and festivals, performing arts, and sporting events in the county. Marketing grants help these organizations with advertising and promotional brochures which helps to bring thousands of visitors to Johnston County each year", said Donna Bailey-Taylor, Executive Director, Johnston County Visitors Bureau.

The grants received from the Johnston County Community Foundation, the Johnston County Arts Council, and the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation were for the support of the Hemingway Reading Series, which was held in conjunction with the Ava Gardner Festival. In partnership with the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, community residents were encouraged to read and discuss Hemingway novels and attend a Hemingway lecture held at the Museum. Participants were given free museum admission to view the new Ava and Hemingway exhibit, which was unveiled at the Ava Gardner Festival Gala, and watch the three films Ava starred in based on Hemingway works. Because of the financial support of these granting organizations, these resources were available to the public at no charge.

The Ava Gardner Museum is located in downtown Smithfield, at 325 E. Market Street and more information may be found on the museum website, www.avagardner.org or by calling 919-934-5830. The museum is open Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm and Sunday 2pm-5pm with admission of $6.00 adults, $5.00 seniors and groups and $4.00 children.

It's wonderful to see the accomplishments of the devoted Ava Gardner Museum staff. Each year we see more and more of their dedication to Ms Gardner. She was beautiful, witty, intelligent, and faithful to her family and friends. I have written reviews of the books written about her and they appear on line on Amazon.com, etc.I have been a dedicated fan and a proud Ava Advocate for many many many (ok that's enough) years. The museum is a delight to visit, to see the room filled with her portraits, her collection of books, cds and the biggest moment to me was to read her one of her movie scripts in the quiet room. Her presence is there. There will never be another Ava Gardner. It is such an honor for me to know that the soundtrack of "Show Boat" was and (hopefully) remains to be a part of the museum's collection. It was included in the First Ava Gardner Festival - subject "Show Boat". Many more years of success. We are loyal fans and look forward to be a part of the Ava Gardner Museum.
