CLAYTON, N.C. -

Ralph Anthony McKinney, the president of the Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce, has died, according to a WakeMed spokesperson.

McKinney, 42, and a group of about ten other motorcycle riders were turning onto I-40 from Aviation Ramp in Raleigh Friday afternoon, Trooper Ed Suttles said. McKinney accelerated before straightening out the motorcycle, which caused it to spin around. He was only going at about 20 miles per hour, Suttles said. But McKinney and his 11-year-old son, Cameron, were thrown off.

The road was slick from rain and the motorcycle's rear tire was worn out, which may have contributed to the accident, Suttles said. But it may have happened even with a new tire, he added.

McKinney and his son were both wearing helmets. But McKinney landed on his head. His son, Cameron, was treated and released from WakeMed.

McKinney, who was born and raised in Durham, is the owner of Re/Max Classic Realty on Neuse River Parkway in Clayton.

"Tony was very outgoing, very involved in the community," said Sally Schlindwein, Executive Director of the Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce. "He was a helper behind the scenes. If you needed him, he would always reach out to help anyone."
