DURHAM, N.C. -

Police say a car took off Wednesday after crashing into another vehicle, driven by an 84-year-old man.

Durham Police are looking for a suspect in the hit-and-run accident that occurred at about 1:27 p.m. on Hillsborough Road near the 15-501 exit ramp.

Police said the suspect was speeding northbound in a Blue Buick as he exited the ramp.

A traffic officer was on patrol on NC-147 North when he observed the suspect's vehicle at a high rate of speed. The officer entered the expressway to attempt to stop the subject, who began to leave the scene dodging traffic. The suspect exited the expressway. The officer drove up on suspect at entrance ramp at Hillsborough Road and turned on emergency lights.

The suspect sped off running the red light at Hillsborough Rd and 15-501 exit ramp when the collision occurred. The suspect then jumped from moving vehicle.

The victim, Walter B. Paschall, 84, of 5143 Old Hillsborough Road, was traveling east on Hillsborough Road in a Ford Escort when he was struck on the right side.

Paschall was transported to Duke Medical Center. Preliminary reports indicate he suffered a broken pelvis and two punctured lungs. He is listed in critical condition.

The suspect is described as a male, 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 170 lbs. He fled the scene of the incident on foot heading toward the Hillandale Golf Course. He was wearing a white tank shirt and blue pants, and possibly a dreadlocks hairstyle. The suspect's car was towed.

Anyone with information related to this incident should call Officer J. L. Hamilton at 560-4935 extension 29451 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 683-1200.
