Johnston Community College's Continuing Education Division is sponsoring two environmental science youth camps this summer at the College's Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center.
Students will cover topics such as wildlife, water, ecology, soils, energy, forestry, and how humans impact the environment. Activities will include soil and water testing, nature walks on the trails, case studies, animal and tree identification, and energy studies. Students will have the opportunity to create tree identification booklets, design solar ovens, use models to study water runoff pollution, and participate in various other activities throughout the week.
The camps will be held the weeks of July 13-17 and July 20-24 on Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and on Friday from 8 a.m. - noon at Howell Woods which is located at 6601 Devil's Racetrack Road in Four Oaks.
The first camp (July 13-17) is for rising fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. The second camp (July 20-24) is for rising seventh and eighth graders. The cost of each camp is $100 and covers text and lab resources as well as lab equipment and materials. All participants will receive a camp t-shirt. Participants are asked to bring bag lunches. Each camp is open to the first 16 registrants and the registration deadline is Tuesday, June 30.
