Tropical depression one formed off the mid-Atlantic coast Thursday morning, but it's not expected to threaten land.
The depression is the first of the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season, which officially begins this Monday, June 1. This is the fourth time in the last ten years that a system has formed before the season officially started.
The depression's maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph. It is possible that the depression could become tropical storm early Friday; if it does it would be Tropical Storm Ana.
The depression will continue to move quickly to the east-northeast over the next day or two. Eventually moving into cooler waters where it is expected to dissipate.
Thursday night the depression was centered about 400 miles east-northeast of the North Carolina coast. The storm will not have any effects on North Carolina, but you can track the system here.
