Emergency officials in Robeson County received calls about a possible tornado that moved through the county causing damage Monday morning, but officals now confirm it was actually a microburst.
Charles Britt, Emergency Management and Fire Marshall said his department began receiving the calls around 9:30 in the morning.
Several structures sustained damage in the Sadie Drive area off Highway 72 East. There were also numerous reports of trees and power lines down, especially on Highway 301.
One mobile home and a nearby structure were destroyed and one person was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Britt.
The area around Sadie Drive experienced the most damage. Penny to golf ball sized hail was also reported as the storms moved through.
The National Weather Service in Wilmington was already investigating the damage to determine if the storm did produce a tornado or simply damaging winds associated with the storm. Preliminary reports have the damage due to winds only, but a final report from the National Weather Service is expected sometime later on Monday or Tuesday.
Damage of this nature is consistent with straight line wind speeds of up to 125 mph. Although there is no evidence that a tornado occurred with this storm, the extent of damage it produced is comparable to a rating of ef-2.
Crews were out assisting residents throughout the morning and afternoon.
