JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. -

About 300 volunteers spent Saturday morning cleaning up the Neuse River, picking up about 14,000 pounds of trash.

They covered 50 miles from Falls Dam in north Raleigh to the Smithfield Town Commons in Johnston County and filled about 400 trash bags.

The trash included bottles, cans, food, cigarette packs, fishing lines, clothes, tires, mattresses, sporting equipment, and even an oven.

"I can't believe that people have this little concern for the community in which they live," said Michael Ellison, who picked up trash with his family in Clayton.

The Neuse River Foundation organizes the clean up once a year.
