RALEIGH, N.C. -

The North Carolina State Fair can be a drain on your wallet any year, but with the economy in a downward spiral in 2008, many families are feeling the effects even more.

While the neon lights from rides and the prizes from carnival games catch the eyes of fairgoers, many families are looking to the free exhibits and shows to enjoy their time at the fair.

"No rides for us, we are enjoying the shows and petting zoo," said fairgoer Christine Smith.

Smith and her three small children are partaking in the fair on a budget. Along with free exhibits, Smith also brought along her own water and snacks for the kids.

"A lot of this food is too much for the little kids but it also saves me some money," Smith said.

The Brown family is also going to fair on a budget.

"We brought about 130 dollars with us and when that is gone we are done," Sharon Brown said.

The family enjoyed the pig races which were free to public.

Entertainment isn't the only thing the North Carolina State Fair has to offer at no additional cost. Many food vendors are also helping families when it comes to meal options.

The Kiwanis Club of Raleigh sells drinks, hot dogs and fries for under $3. John Aldridge who volunteers at the booth admits the selection may not be like everywhere else inside the Midway, but the price is different.

Fair organizers also designed days when people can get in free. Wednesday, Oct. 22 is Military Day. Active servicemen and women can receive free admission along with four guests. Thursday, Oct. 23, is the Food Lion Canned Food Drive. Everyone who brings in four cans of food with them will receive free admission into the fair.
