More than 100 people recreated a Confederate army camp Saturday to celebrate the 144th anniversary of the Battle of Bentonville. It's the largest battle ever fought in North Carolina during the Civil War, according to North Carolina Historic Sites, which organized the event at the Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site in Four Oaks.
Dozens of men dressed as Confederate soldiers demonstrated drills as a narrator described their uniforms, weapons, and tools.
"It enables me to kind of walk how they walked and live the life they lived and you learn to appreciate what they went through a lot more than just reading about it," said history teacher Lynn Bull of Goldsboro.
Civilians reenacted other aspects of life in the training camps.
"I'm cooking meals and just doing it in a period-correct way as much as possible like they would have done," said Lora Woodard of Princeton. "You don't use pan spray. You have to use a lot of bacon, grease, and animal fats in your cooking."
The reenactment attracted hundreds of people.
"I love history," said Tom Toole of Smithfield. "And I want my kids and great-grandboys here to learn about history, learn what happened back in the early days and how our great union was formed."
