And Her Students at the Vocal Precision Studio Student Showcase
GARNER, NC—October 27, 2009—The applause quite possibly could've been heard miles away as Rozlyn Sorrell finished her final song at the Third Annual Vocal Precision Studio Student Showcase this past Saturday night, October 24th.
With student performances ranging from a wide variety of music—pop, country, R & B, contemporary gospel, rock and reggae to name a few, the crowd of just over 100 was treated to an evening of incredible talent. At one point in the show performer, Miguel Joseph, removed the band holding his ponytail in place so he could bop his head to the music bringing his energy from the stage to the audience.
Backed by a three-piece band led by Mr. McCrae Hardy, former music director and conductor for the North Carolina Theatre, all of the students performed three-song sets.
Howard University Graduate, Marsha Coletrane, kicked off the evening with a stunning performance of "One Night Only". She was followed by Meredith College Senior Kayla Teems who proceeded to remind the audience there is absolutely no reason we shouldn't hear from our significant others as she performed Reba McIntyre's, "Why Haven't I Heard From You?" Not far behind her was lyricist in her own right, Shereen Montgomery, who performed an original composition, "Giving Him Worship" set to the music of "Killing Me Softly". Miguel Joseph closed the student set proving why he is considered an institution in the North Carolina music scene as he gave a rousing performance of "King Without a Crown".
After a brief intermission Rozlyn Sorrell herself took the stage for a six-song set and she didn't disappoint either. Performing songs from various genres, including her operatic piece from her role as "Sharon" from Raleigh's Theater in the Park production of "Master Class", Rozlyn kept the crowd wanting more. A highlight of her performance was a beautiful rendition of the love song from the 1978 film Superman, "Can You Read My Mind?"
Dr. Ellen Markus of the UNC Voice Center provided the Opening Remarks and Welcome while Shelia Wilson, Director of Public Affairs at WCLY-AM, a Curtis Media Group station, did an excellent job keeping the audience engaged as Master of Ceremonies.
In its third year at the Garner Historic Auditorium, the Showcase is the vehicle used to highlight the singing skills and vocal accomplishments learned throughout the calendar year. It is what many of her students strive for. Performing in the Showcase caps off their hard work and determination. For many of them, it is the first time they have had an opportunity to perform on a stage with musicians in front of a LIVE audience.
Ms. Sorrell, a native of Queens, New York, relocated to Garner in 2002 by way of Los Angeles, California. Her career has allowed her to perform with such world-renowned artists as Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston, Al Jarreau, and Cece Winans.
She has performed as a guest soloist on the "Hour of Power" and as a principal cast member in "Glory of Christmas" and "Glory of Easter" at Robert Schuller's Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, CA. Since arriving in North Carolina, she has performed as a soloist with the North Carolina Symphony, as a featured performer during Artsplosure downtown Raleigh, and as the "Guest Artist" for the annual Cabaret Night with North Carolina Theatre at Memorial Hall at the Progress Energy Center. Recently, Rozlyn won acclaim for her role as "Sharon" in Raleigh's Theater in the Park production of "Master Class". This holiday season you can catch Rozlyn as she performs various concert dates with the North Carolina Symphony.
On Saturday night, October 24th, audience members from Garner, Wake County, and the surrounding area were truly treated to a magnificent performance for "One Night Only".

Wow! I really hate I missed this event, but I'm definately going to mark my calendar for next year's event. Hey, I might even perform myself!! For all of the performers, keep doing what you are doing because you are definately working with one of the greatest vocal coaches in the area (Rozlyn Sorrell).
