CLAYTON, N.C. -

Elton Pittman, 86, and his wife Laura Lee, 83, opened Pittman Jewelers at the corner of Main Street and Lombard Street in Clayton in 1947. The couple has worked side by side for 62 years. This Christmas, they will close shop.

"It's just time to take off, that's what my daughter said. ‘Take off and enjoy some.' I said, ‘well I enjoy this.' She said, ‘you need to take off. Go fishing,'" Elton Pittman explains.

He says he will miss the people and the work.

"I'll have to come down here about every day for a while until I get used to not coming down here. This is home," he said.

They have put everything on sale, including rings, diamonds, and china. And they hope to sell most of their inventory by Christmas.

The couple has not made any plans for retirement.

But, "we'll just take it easy. We might even travel a little bit more," Laura Lee said.
