Johnston County Story

West Johnston Marching Band Caps Undefeated Season with Win at Cary Band Days

Credit: AP Online
JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C.

The spectators in the stands at the 50th Annual Cary Band Day this past Saturday were treated to over 35 great marching band performances.  For our local West Johnston High School Marching Band, it was the final performance of their competitive marching season and what a show it was!  A magical evening from start to finish, this last competitive performance brought to a close their first undefeated season to date.

The band won the Grand Sweepstakes for the third year in a row (highest combined score of the parade and field show), and for the first time in seven years the awards for best Drumline and Brass Section of the entire day! In fact, our brass section received a PERFECT score from the field music judge with our drumline receiving a score of 98!

It was an incredible marching band season in every way with the students working hard each and every day and performing like champions both on and off the field. This year, the West band did what no band in the state has done in the last 20 years by winning a the Bands of America Regional Competition in Towson, Maryland, scoring the highest score anyone can remember at an area competition, and they have just concluded their first true undefeated season.

What's next for the West Band?  They are now finalizing their music, show and parade technique in preparation for their appearance in the 2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade!  For more information, please visit us on the web at www.wjhsbands.org

These kids are truly amazing, and we could not be any prouder of each and every one of them for the hundreds of hours of practice they’ve put in, and for coming together and having a successful marching season even when they have an extra show to learn for the Macy’s parade.
Anyone who hasn’t seen these kids perform, should try to catch them sometime, it’s really wonderful!

Here we go again,,,,,,another exciting and proud moment that those wonderful kids brought to WEST!! Another memory in my Freshman Mom yearbook. The tears of joy always find themselves rolling down my cheek as I feel my heart pound hard and chills down my spine for the amazement those young men and women bring to WEST and all of us proud parents. But just as important is the hard work by Mr. Britt and his directing team and the dedication and sacrifice they have made. “Thank you, Mr. Britt, for loving our kids and being as proud as you always appear to be!”

New York City has NO IDEA what is coming their way!!!  “MACY’S?,,,,,,be ready!!”

Love all you WEST Band professionals!!!

What a wonderful group of talented students!  I had the pleasure of seeing them perform at two different events this year and their show truly took my breath away.  This is a group our community should be extremely proud of and know that they are wonderful representatives of not only Johnston County, but North Carolina as well.  I would encourage everyone to help support this group to get them to the world stage of New York City so everyone can see what they can accomplish!
