BENSON, N.C. -

Five fire departments battled a blaze at Polymer Group Inc. in Benson early this morning.

Benson firefighters got the call about the fire at the plant at 1203 Chicopee Road at about 6:15 a.m., Fire Chief Allen Johnson said.

Crews from the Dunn, Elevation, Meadow, and Smithfield fire departments also responded.

The fire started inside the plant while people were working. But no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Company spokesman Cliff Bridges says they suspect the fire started with a lighting strike.

Chief Johnson estimates the fire left about half a million dollars worth of damage, including machinery.

But Bridges said the damage to the building is not significant.
