She goes from car to car outside a Raleigh cancer treatment center, tucking a small piece of paper in each door.

Each has a short message on it, meant to brighten the day of a patient, but one in particular sums up CJ Scarlet's mission. It says, ‘The way to be happy is to make others so.'

The gesture is just one of more than 365 acts of kindness Scarlet plans to dole out in a year.

As founder of The Kindness Cure, she's asking others around the world to join in on the effort to help reach a goal of one million kind acts.

"The purpose is to try to life the tone of this troubled country," Scarlet said. "People are discouraged, so they need something to lift them up and feel hopeful."

The Clayton native said her positive outlook came out of her experience with a life-threatening illness. A long-time lupus survivor, she learned her condition was taking a turn for the worse in 2002.

Scarlet said she was devastated, her spirit broken. But advice from a Tibetan changed the course of her life. He told her to stop feeling sorry for herself and to help others.

"When I did, I felt happier. And the happier I became the better I felt, until my condition went into remission," Scarlet said.

She now focuses her energy on spreading health and happiness as an author, motivational speaker, and life coach.

Scarlet documents and shares all of her good deeds on her website and encourages others in her online network to do the same.
